Eurocultured Review: Sunday 24th May 2009

Village Kollektiv: trombon-er action
Eurocultured has become a Manchester fixture in the Spring, and with the demise of D:Percussion is pretty much the only game left in town.
How did it work out? Good and bad – the music was excellent, but the organisation was a little fucking annoying, to say the least. › Continue reading
The Strangest Website
I don’t even know how I got here. One moment I was happily surfing the internet for pr0n, the next moment I was watching a slow motion video on YouTube of a fat man pouring green slime all over himself and then I was on his website reading how he’d:
80s remakes: Hollywood goes too far

"Come in to the mutliplex, or there will be ...trouble."
The news that Eighties movies are now old enough to be remake fodder fills me with terror, trepidation and, yes, a teensy bit of excitement.
Films reported to be in the pipeline include Flash Gordon, Robocop, Dune and Ghostbusters. › Continue reading
NOMAD034: enn.eye.cee – Sub Version
If you’re a complete geek like myself, you will know that SubVersion is a piece of software widely used for source code version control. I use it on this site. It’s GREAT! However, given the fact that probably hasn’t given you an erection, you should also know that it’s the name of EnnEyeCee’s fourth pounding drum and bass mix in a row. Huuuuuzzzzzzaaaaaaaaarrrrrr!!!! Good sir: Turn your speakers up until they make a buzzing noise, sellotape them to your head and press play.

Janek Schaefer & Cottrell/Kopecek/Hunter @ Burst Couch
I admittedly know very little about drone music and sound art. I know some of it is brilliant though, and Burst Couch always seems to come up with the goods. They had Graham Massey on last time. This time it was headlined by the apparently legendary Janek Schaefer, who played at a wooden throne mangling weird noises from some strange box through effects pedals. See how much I know about this stuff? Pictured above: Cottrell/Kopecek/Hunter of Concrete Moniker Records.
How not to network

Follow this advice and you'll be mocked by your own reformed luncheon meat. Forever
1. Go to an industry conference [if only! More likely:] industry conference.
2. Spend the day getting increasingly bored with the seminars/stands/whatever.
3. At the after dinner drinks, discover that people only want to talk about work.
4. Find like-minded souls who also hate talking about work. They’ll be the ones looking awkward round the edges of the hotel bar. › Continue reading
NOMAD033: enn.eye.cee – Anal Trauma
I don’t think we’ve ever had a mix with a title this wrong before…. When you listen to it though, you’ll probably see why the name’s ever so slightly appropriate. Maybe. Very. Nasty. Drum and Bass. Enjoy. Don’t sit on anything sharp now.

Hugo Hugo Chavez!
I do try to keep politics out of my posts here, and I have been trying to quit doing the youtube-based blog posts as well, but I’ve watched this about 19 times and I still love it.
So – nyer nyer nyer nyer nyer. No-one likes a quitter anyway.
Photo oh-noes

*Insert "ironic" joke relating to learning disabilities that Ricky Gervais and Jim Davidson would find acceptable but is actually just offensive*
While it pretty much seems as though I steal Graham Linehan’s ideas every week these days, Awkward Family Photos was too good to ignore.
So, now that Graham’s 127,000 readers have enjoyed already it, here it is for the fourteen people who click the Nomad blog tab up there from time to time while listening to the latest banging drum and bass mix from enn.eye.cee.
The music keeps playing if you change tabs or posts, you know. Its zen magic!
Though not as magic as the picture that follows if you press continue reading… › Continue reading
Kethani: Sci-fi with added real ale
I love sci fi. And I love real ale.
I suspect that many of my fellow beard-stroking geeks have a similar combination of tastes.
So I was initially unsurprised to find references to (what is presumably Timothy Taylor’s) Landlord ale in Eric Brown’s Kethani, an enjoyable collection of short stories all gathered together to make a novel.
The characters spend a lot of time in the pub discussing the arrival of aliens called the Kethani (who have come to Earth with the gift of immortality) so it’s fair enough that there would be the odd reference to the beer that the characters drink.
But it did get a bit much – Landlord is mentioned no less than 10 times in the book. It is ubiquitous, whether the characters are drinking to get pissed, in the pub, at home or with a meal. It is even described as “rich and creamy”!
I should point out that I have no reason to believe that this is one of those rare examples of product placement in a book – in fact, I’m sure that Eric Brown just really likes Landlord ale – but if it is product placement, it’s bloody brilliant.
I’m dying for a rich, creamy pint of Landlord. Yum.
