The inauguration of Obama may (or may not) have brought about political change in America, but it has also had the unexpected effect of coining a very American neologism.

Taking offence to homophobic evangelical pastor Rick Warren’s role at the Obama inauguration, gay journalist and advice columnist Dan Savage decided to create a new meaning for the phrase “saddlebacking“, in tribute to pastor Warren’s Saddleback Church.

And so a vote was held, and a meaning coined -

Saddlebacking: the phenomenon of Christian teens engaging in unprotected anal sex in order to preserve their virginities

A suitable insult and a handy term, at least if you live in Bible Belt America, where such weird practices are reportedly fairly widespread. And, presumably, where some people are actually stupid enough to think that you’re still a virgin even if you’ve been fucked in the ass.

However, Warren should probably be pleased: the last person to receive the Dan Savage treatment was former US Senator Rick Santorum, who in an interview kind of equated homosexuality with dog-fucking and paedophilia. Savage’s competition gave Santorum the definition “The frothy mix of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex.”
