1-Bit Symphony Posted by zenzenzen

Fed up with the music industries relentless pushing of hype over substance? Adding “value” to music in desperate ways to try to stay relevent in this ADHD age of stems, samples and synthesizers when in theory anyone with any interest in music can already produce any kind of music they want for free at home. The reality is even wider than the music company executives realise in that now people can not only use software on their home computers (such as the infamous garageband) but also create music online for free with such amazing services as Aviary:Myna, AudioTool and uJam, hell even check out jamstudio. Forget about music exec’s ideas on how people “should” interact with music by examing such pail concepts as Mxp4 and youSpins. In fact, audio hardware hacking has made a strong resurgance thanks to great products such as the Arduino and Processing, with a whole range of pocket synths and open source schematics available online. Recent favourite of mine has to be Tristan Perich’s fantastic 1-Bit Symphony…

Tristan Perich’s 1-Bit Symphony is an electronic composition in five movements on a single microchip. Though housed in a CD jewel case, 1-Bit Symphony is not a recording in the traditional sense; it literally “performs” its music live when turned on. A complete electronic circuit—programmed by the artist and assembled by hand—plays the music through a headphone jack mounted into the case itself.

NOMAD039: Erik XVI – Stories from the Dystopian Border

Erik XVI

Erik XVI treats us to a deeply atmospheric two hours this week. From dense soundscapes, through layers of complex techno and electronica, ending up in hard, broken beats, this is an excellent mix. Happily, it also coincides with the release of his new EP on Highpoint Lowlife recordings. You’d better go and buy it hadn’t you? It’s only 3 quid for the download. Can’t say fairer than that! I’ve got it. It’s fucking mint. Track list after the jump.

Janek Schaefer & Cottrell/Kopecek/Hunter @ Burst Couch Posted by Badger Von Winklebaum

Cottrell / Kopecek / HunterI admittedly know very little about drone music and sound art. I know some of it is brilliant though, and Burst Couch always seems to come up with the goods. They had Graham Massey on last time. This time it was headlined by the apparently legendary Janek Schaefer, who played at a wooden throne mangling weird noises from some strange box through effects pedals. See how much I know about this stuff? Pictured above: Cottrell/Kopecek/Hunter of Concrete Moniker Records.

Burst Couch Electronica Posted by Badger Von Winklebaum

Disco Operating System @ Burst Couch 26

Bust Couch is Manchester’s longest running Electronica night. I’ve had trouble finding decent non-dancefloor nights of this ilk recently, but this one definitely makes up for it.

Now in it’s new venue at St.Clement’s Church, upgraded from the shitty function room above some pub, it’s the best chin-stroking you’ll get this side of Aphex Twin’s pants. Or something like that. The last one had visuals by Cycloptic (who I was going on about before), music from Disco Operating System, Parking Non Stop, and the mighty Two Grahams.

The Two Grahams, if you haven’t heard of them, are Graham Massey – a founding member of 808 State – and Graham Clark, a jazz violinist who has played with Elbow and Gong amongst others. Together, well, you need to hear them :-)

More pictures after the jump…. and get down to the next one!

NOMAD005: Jazz and Electronica

Got Quixotic down to play some tunes…he isn’t a DJ, but he writes some beautiful electronic music and as I now know he’s a trained classical composer. No fucking way! Hopefully I’ll get him or his band to do a live set sometime soon. In the meantime, listen to this, and download some of his tunes from archive.org. They are proper good!

NOMAD004: Electronics with a hint of BLOODCLAAAT

RearSpoiler, who for some reason has come all the way from sunny Australia to the fucking well cold UK, mixes us up some dubstep, ragga, jungle, breakcore and tec house… dunno whether its actually called tec house at the moment…stuff on labels like BPitch Control and Shitkatapult anyway. Marvellous. Check his own productions out on myspace.com/rearspoiler too…they’re pretty good :-)
