The news that Eighties movies are now old enough to be remake fodder fills me with terror, trepidation and, yes, a teensy bit of excitement.

Films reported to be in the pipeline include Flash Gordon, Robocop, Dune and Ghostbusters.

OK, so it isn’t startling news that Hollywood loves remakes, but consider the fact that the 80s originals were already made by the blockbuster-generation and filled with huge explosions, SFX, razzle dazzle and, um, flim-flam. Remakes should add something to a film. What next, a remake of Independence Day? Jurassic Park?

What on earth is going to be the point of a new Robocop? It’s hard to imagine it being as violent or funny as the Paul Verhoeven version. Although at least Darren Aronofsky is set to direct.

Will a new Ghostbusters be more amazing than a film in which a giant marshmallow man terrorises New York and Sigourney Weaver actually looks really hot?

And do the people remaking Flash Gordon not realise that it was only a complete accident that the 1980 version even functions as a watchable film, never mind became a cult classic?

I can at least understand a remake of Dune. That film was so bad that to ruin it they’d have to get the director of some dross like Hancock in to make it any worse. Oh, wait, what? They’ve specifically hired Hancock director Peter Berg to direct it? Gah!

All of this negativity should disregarded, though, as the evil marketing peple will have their way. Chances are, I will go and see these films anyway because I will watch almost any sci-fi film released. I even watched Transformer last summer. The shame! THE SHAME!

Big Man Japan is a sort of mockumentary about a Godzilla-like crime-fighting ordinary-joe. In Japan.

Big Man Japan is a sort of mockumentary about a Godzilla-like crime-fighting ordinary-joe. In Japan.

Sadly, despite the awesomeness of this trailer, early word is that Big Man Japan is patchy, with intensely weird highs and averagely dull lows, if you can call a a giant semi-naked fella hunting down giant grotesque mutants in any way average.

Although average does at least mean that Big Man Japan will be 450% better than the similarly-themed Hancock, at the very least.

And I still reckon it looks much better than average. Personally, I can’t wait for the subbed version’s release on DVD in June.

Hat-tip: Graham Linehan’s blog
