Oi! Patrick Moore!

Sir Patrick Moore, known as The Gamesmaster to many of my generation, has also secretly been carrying on as an astronomer and presenter of The Sky At Night since, oh, about ten minutes after the BBC was invented.

Anyway – between all of that video gaming and stargazing, it seems he doesn’t have a lot of time for modern music, as suggested by his review of Muse’s Supermassive Black Hole and from The Quietus:

Sir Patrick says: “I remember this one! I think it’s dreadful.”

And his review of Pink Floyd’s Set Controls for the Heart of the Sun:

Sir Patrick says: “To my ear, all these songs are universally awful.”

Though The Quietus also make space to ask questions about – er – space. Like:

Does space have a boundary, in fact, and if so what lies beyond it?

Sir Patrick says: “Either space is finite or else it isn’t. If it’s finite, then what’s outside it? Maybe there’s nothing – no more space. If the other hand space is infinite, you can’t think about something that goes on forever. My brain won’t do it and nor will yours. You can’t describe infinity in ordinary words: I can’t and neither could Einstein. I know because I asked him. Ha ha!”

Anyway, enough of stealing material from The Quietus, a website so classy it has adverts for The Kings of Convenience’s new album and a Hawkwind gig. Time instead to steal from a shoddy sixteen-year-old television show:

Little Boy: Hello Gamesmaster, are there any cheats on Sonic 2 for infinite lives?
The Gamesmaster: No there’re aren’t, bye bye!

“Well, we’re rather stuck here. Either space is finite or else it isn’t. Ha ha!”
